History / Charter: The Founding of Local 80

The Founding of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers

Our union traces its beginnings to the earliest days of our industry when insulation first began to be used extensively - about 1880.

In 1884 the Salamander Association of "Boiler and Pipe Felters" was organized in New York City.  In March 1888, the group affiliated with the Knights of Labor.  Meanwhile, other independent unions were forming in cities throughout the country.

By 1898, the local unions were numerous and strong enough so that a first attempt at a national organization was made.  unfortunately this did not bear fruit, nor did attempts in 1900 and 1902.

In 1903, however, the efforts to form a national movement were successful.  Delegates for seven local unions and General Asbestos Workers.  On September 22, 1904, a charter was granted by the American Federation of National Association of Heat, Frost, General Insulators and Asbestos Workers of America.  The present name was adopted on October 31, 1910.
