In 1927 Vernon became a member of Local 80. Vernon was elected Business Agent in 1931. During the years of 1935-1938 it was at his direction and constant guidance through the depression that held this local together.

On December 21, 1949, Local 80 was dealt a stunning blow by the explosion of a boiler being installed at the Daniel Boone Hotel. The explosion resulted in the injury to 3 members of Local 80 with Business Agent Vernon Adkins being pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Local 80 felt quite hopeless at the loss of their Business Agent, who had served Local 80 continuously since 1931.
